B3) H Occupancies for Building Departments

Class Description:

This is a full-day class that covers the subject of hazardous materials to assist the Building Official in properly dealing with the more dangerous occupancies.   The pertinent sections of the IBC regarding Hazardous Materials will be covered, including each type of H occupancy, as well as additional sections of some other codes.  The class covers how to correctly classify materials, correctly determine when a label of “H” occupancy is appropriate and determine various manners of protection required to reduce risk.  Control areas, storage, open and closed systems will all be discussed in depth.  

Learning Outcomes:

  • Provide Plans Examiners and Building & Fire Officials with the background and knowledge of where to look in the code to determine if an area of a building is actually an H occupancy.
  • If it is an H occupancy where to find the code requirements and how to apply the requirements.
  • Point out the significant changes in the 2021 IBC relating to H occupancies.

About our Presenter:

 Bill has been a Plans examiner since 1996 and has reviewed several H occupancies in his career. His diverse background doing plan reviews and Consulting as a 3rd party consultant has given him the opportunity to consult and review many different types of H Occupancies and help Design professionals avoid the H classification in some cases. Having served on the IBC general committee and the IEBC committee, Bill brings to the class the ability to present the background and intent behind various aspects of the code while teaching all of his classes. 

ICC Preferred Provider Program Continuing Education Credit (ICC PPP CEUs):

OBOA is an approved International Code Council (ICC) Preferred Provider. The Preferred Provider Program recognizes and promotes ICC-approved educational offerings as they relate to codes, standards and guidelines, as well as building construction materials, products and methods. ICC certificate holders may obtain ICC CEUs from Preferred Providers that can be applied toward the renewal requirements of ICC’s certification program. It is the intent of OBOA that all classes offered at institutes will be approved for the Preferred Provider Program.

ICC Preferred Provider Program | 0.6 CEUs (must attend all six hours for credit)

An ICC CEU is a continuing education unit; each 10 clock hours of continuing education equals 1 CEU. Our typical one-day seminar has 6 hours of instruction, or 0.6 CEUs. Credit is awarded for a variety of activities wherein the objective is achieving relevant professional knowledge beyond that required for initial certification. Participation in all OBOA courses are approved for International Code Council (ICC) certification renewal continuing education credits as noted for each class. Please check with your appropriate jurisdiction and/or institution regarding your specific continuing education credit needs.
