A1) 2021 Oregon Commercial Energy Code Overview and Best Practices

Class Description:

This session will provide an overview of Oregon energy code history and recent energy code policy developments. Attendees will learn about the requirements of the recently adopted 2021 Oregon energy code (based on ASHRAE 90.1-2019), including the envelope, mechanical, and electrical requirements, with a focus on what has changed in the last code cycle, specific Oregon amendments, compliance forms, and day-to-day knowledge of what to look for in code reviews. Key energy efficiency provisions will be highlighted in a discussion-based, instructor-led format. Code compliance pathways will be discussed, and resources for additional information will be provided.

About our Presenter: 

Nick O’Neil serves as the Director of Research and Evaluation at Energy 350, working on efficiency programs and policy throughout the Northwest. Nick is a mechanical engineer with over 20 years of experience in the commercial building science and energy efficiency field. In his previous profession as a mechanical design engineer, Nick is well-versed in the nuances of how to comply with energy codes in the Northwest and how that translates to building design. Nick is a registered Professional Engineer, LEED Accredited Professional, and has his Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering from University at Buffalo.

Blake Shelide serves as a Facilities Engineer with the Oregon Department of Energy, providing technical expertise for a number of ODOE programs. Blake is a licensed mechanical engineer in Oregon, and his career has included work as a design engineer and consultant which involved engineering and implementing energy efficiency projects, tracking energy consumption, and performing energy audits. With ODOE, Blake is the lead for ODOE’s role with commercial energy codes and standards and serves on the Construction Industry Energy Board. Blake also has a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Notre Dame.

Paul Vinje is the Chief Plans Examiner at the City of Hillsboro and has worked in the construction industry for 20 years before joining the City in 2003. He has worked hard to become one of only few Master Code Professionals in the state of Oregon. Outside of the office, Paul takes great pride in his teenage daughters, who keep him busy with their activities in school and art.

 

ICC Preferred Provider Program Continuing Education Credit (ICC PPP CEUs):

OBOA is an approved International Code Council (ICC) Preferred Provider. The Preferred Provider Program recognizes and promotes ICC-approved educational offerings as they relate to codes, standards and guidelines, as well as building construction materials, products and methods. ICC certificate holders may obtain ICC CEUs from Preferred Providers that can be applied toward the renewal requirements of ICC’s certification program. It is the intent of OBOA that all classes offered at institutes will be approved for the Preferred Provider Program.

ICC PPP Pending Approval Course | 0.6 ICC CEUs

An ICC CEU is a continuing education unit; each 10 clock hours of continuing education equals 1 CEU. Our typical one-day seminar has 6 hours of instruction, or 0.6 CEUs. Credit is awarded for a variety of activities wherein the objective is achieving relevant professional knowledge beyond that required for initial certification. Participation in all OBOA courses are approved for International Code Council (ICC) certification renewal continuing education credits as noted for each class. Please check with your appropriate jurisdiction and/or institution regarding your specific continuing education credit needs.
