When the Clients aren't up to Code: What to do with Job-Related
Burnout, Logistical Breakdown, and Angry Customers
Presented
by Dr. Carilyn Ellis
As Bruce W. Stanfor d so poetically stated, "Shooting the messenger may be a time-honored emoti onal response to unwanted news, but it is not a very effective method of re maining well-informed." With the systematic breakdown of life as we know it brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and concurrent political, social, and economic crises, the contextual world of building safety is unrecognizable. Stakeholders, implementation standards, and resolutions range from delayed to non-existent due to a variety of breakdowns in needed resources and com munication. Prevention has been supplanted by reactive liability mitigation , and everyone has suffered as a result.
Everyone in the building industry is facing burnout, and it is only getting worse with the backlogs manifested by the pandemic needing to be completed at record pacing. Studies of burnout in the fields of construction and bui lders in the United Kingdom demonstrate it is currently the most vulnerable population to burnout, with 62% of people in this industry endorsing stres s. These numbers supersede healthcare professionals and first responders in some regions. In this presentation, Dr. Ellis will talk about the stressor s currently facing Oregon builders and their partners, how this has contrib uted to burnout in the profession, and proactive steps toward sustainabilit y.
Dr. Ellis will also talk about the dif ficulty of managing stakeholder/ client expectations and disappointments wi th tangible methods of de-escalating and reducing the burden of “being the messenger.”
